We see it regularly. New speakers come on the market, make claims about their tech, and then fail to back it up. Lame, but not every speaker company has the gumption we do.
You’ve likely heard the name, “Klipsch Reference Speakers” before now. That’s because these speakers are some of the most lauded in Klipsch history.
Each time a new iteration of the Reference home theater speaker series comes out, we’ve made them a little better than their respective predecessors.
The 2022 iteration is no different.

What Are the Upgrades for 2022 Reference Speakers?
“An Evolution, Not a Revolution” - Mark Casavant, Klipsch Vice President of Product Development
The new, high-quality Klipsch Reference speaker series delivers better sound quality, precision, clarity and effortless power. Let’s start with the tech:
Updated Tractrix Horn: Accuracy definitely counts here. A new, larger, edge-to-edge proprietary Tractrix® horn provides improved coverage, bandwidth, and directivity control. You will have enhanced control of where you want the sound to go in the room with new Reference speakers.
Reimagined Woofer Design: New woofers made of Spun-Copper Thermoformed Crystal Polymer minimizes resonance for more true-to-life sound. This is actually trickle-down tech from the previous generation of Reference Premiere speakers, using steeper angling of the cones for smoother response at higher frequencies and better crossover integration for improved accuracy and transparency. In plain English, you will feel like you’re in the movie or the recording studio with the engineer. Not too shabby.
New Sleek Design: Luxury black scratch-resistant wood grain vinyl finish, hidden fasteners, upgraded binding posts, and discrete Dolby Atmos connections allow for frustration-free setup and integration. The Klipsch logo is now a black background with copper text, returning to our “Happiness is Copper and Black” roots. Okay, it just looks cool.
Klipsch Reference Speakers and Dolby Atmos Surround Sound:
Did you know more than 500-million people worldwide have a streaming subscription for movies, TV, and music? Since you’re most likely one of the folks paying for that top-tier content, shouldn’t it sound stunning as well? In order to keep up with changing technology, streaming platforms are offering more Dolby Atmos, high-resolution content.
This is why Dolby Atmos is an important part of new Klipsch Reference speakers. All-new and refined Dolby Atmos connectors and built-in wire management are available on the R-800 II and R-600 II tower speakers, meaning you can easily add the R-40SA to deliver the Dolby Atmos, 360° immersive experience into the room.
Or, just get the R-605FA floorstanding speakers with Dolby Atmos built into the top and add the R-40SA speakers for ceiling or wall placement as surround sound speakers.
Any way you decide to go, your Klipsch Reference home theater with Dolby Atmos will deliver an immersive soundstage to put you at the literal center of the action.
What’s New About the Reference Subwoofers?
The all-new R-121SW 12-inch and R-101SW 10-inch subwoofers have larger cabinets for a lower cutoff frequency, meaning the subs drop deeper, more cinematic bass for all of your faves. Just watch any of the “Jurassic Park” movies. You’ll be a believer.
Externally, the new Reference subwoofers feature silicone rubber trim rings, a tonal matte finish, and a vinyl baffle for a sleeker, more refined look than its predecessors. The port on the back of the subwoofer has been moved from the left-hand corner to extend the length of the port and improve cabinet tuning.
Since coming onto the market in 1999, Klipsch Reference speakers have received worldwide kudos. It took thousands of labor hours, 100+ hand-drawn sketches, and more than 2000 hours of music played by our engineers to make the new Klipsch Reference speakers our best yet.
